The Northwestern University Zen Society
Weekly Meetings
The Society is a recognized student organization meeting weekly on the Northwestern University Evanston, Illinois campus. Anyone is welcome. There are no fees or dues. Our sole purpose is to support each other in the practice of Zen, and to explore how the Zen teachings can positively impact our lives. We're a friendly and open group, so bring your questions and don't be shy!
Meetings typically begin with one or more periods of zazen (meditation), followed by dokusan (individual meetings with the teacher). Dokusan is primarily for those students doing formal koan study, but is open also to anyone who'd like to discuss their practice one-on-one. Our meetings end with group discussion. If you've never meditated before, we'll teach you: please arrive a few minutes early, since meditation begins promptly at 7:30pm.
Our teacher is Meido Moore Roshi, a Zen priest and lineage holder in the Japanese Rinzai tradition. If you'd like to contact him directly, please go to the "Contact Us" page.
Meeting Time: Thursday evenings, 7:30-9:00pm
Location: The Oratory Room of Alice Millar Chapel (attached to Parkes Hall), 1870 Sheridan Road, Evanston, IL.
Directions: Enter Parkes Hall on Chicago Avenue; this is the southmost entrance into the building, next to the parking lot. Turn left down the first hallway. Go past washrooms and through the double doors, turn left again, and then go through the first door on your left (next to the emergency exit). This is the stairway leading up to the Oratory Room.
What to Wear/Bring: Loose, comfortable clothing is best (you'll be sitting crosslegged on the floor, so tight pants are not good). We generally have enough meditation cushions, but bringing your own pillows or cushions of any kind is helpful.
Here is a FLYER for our meetings: please help us by downloading and distributing!
